ABOUT RURAQ MAKI
Ruraq Maki is a non-profit organization that creates economic opportunities for low income female artisans working with traditional crafts. Peru is the second largest exporter of cocaine in the world and also one of the poorest countries in South America. Women are often coerced into drug trafficking. Drug sentencing laws in Peru are extremely strict, where these women will serve 10-15 year sentences. Ruraq Maki works with these women while in prison to develope new products using traditional Andean materials and establishing a stable market for their goods in the US.
On a team with my students at San Francisco State University we:
